A year later family, friends search for closure after Bellmead hit-and-run

Friends of a West woman say her killer is still out there. Jana McElyea was the victim of a hit and run at the intersection of New Dallas Highway and Montrose Street one year ago.

“She was a mom. She was a wife. She was a friend. She was a daughter. She was someone. And she mattered.”

Today, Wendy Cole is still looking for answers in the death of her friend Jana McElyea.

They were friends for 15 years. McElyea was a victim of a hit and run on Highway 77.

“A year later and we still don’t know who did it? We have their car it was a 2007 blue Hyundai Sonata but we don’t have the person that drove it,” Cole said.

It happened July 3rd just after 9 p.m. McElyea was walking near the intersection when the vehicle hit her.

“I just couldn’t believe it. I just couldn’t believe it because she was such a sweet person. She was such a sweet sweet soul,” Cole said.

A year later and with no arrests made Cole wants to know who is responsible.

“The person that killed her. The person that let her die alone in the middle of the street like trash got to enjoy the 4th of July yesterday,” Cole said.

She wants anyone who might know something, to come forward soon.

“She was a genuinely good person and she deserved better than this,” Cole said. “She deserves justice.”

Bellmead Police say this is still an open case under investigation. If you have any information you are asked to contact Detective Seymore at 254-799-0251.
