Dozens of family members and friends gathered on Thursday night to remember 27-year-old Deonshira Slider with a balloon release.
The mother was shot in front of her four-year-old son last Friday morning in the parking lot at the Crest Ridge Apartments.
Family members believe they know who killed Deon, but police officers say they still have a lot of evidence and tips to go through.
“I don’t have nothing else now. She was there for me,” said Casundra Washington, Deon’s mother.
Almost a week after Deon got gunned down in front of her son, loved ones said goodbye by releasing pink and white balloons – her favorite colors.
However, questions surrounding Deon’s death still linger.
“We are just asking as her family, if you know who did it, if you saw anything, if you have any type of evidence, please tell police,” said Tomeka Womack, Deon’s cousin.
For Deon’s son, who is now living with his grandmother, it’s a nightmare he can barely understand. The justice the family is fighting for is mainly for him.
“He witnessed everything that went on with this situation. You know, you have kids, you know, my baby is here without a mother now,” said Washington.
Police haven’t made any arrests at this time.
“We have a lot of leads. However, we still need some more information on trying to get the suspect on this,” said Detective Jose Orozco, with the Hillsboro Police Department.
The family is pleading for someone to turn in the murderer.
“Somebody that seen what’s going on, that saw something, that have a good heart, that they come forward to authorities and tell them what they seen,” said Kenneth Wallace, Deon’s boyfriend.
“Put yourself in our shoes, just for a moment. You know, open your heart up and help us. Because at the end of the day, we are getting ready to bury our loved one,” said Womack.
Police are offering a $2,000 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest and indictment. To leave tips, you can call 254-580-9120.
