Part of the kitchen area of Cesar Chavez Middle School in Waco was damaged by fire Saturday night and the cafeteria area of the school was closed off Monday with a strong odor throughout the area.
Waco fire units were dispatched to the school in the 700 block of South 15th Street just before 11 p.m. Saturday following an alarm activation that indicated smoke odor and haze.
Firefighters located fire in the kitchen area above the ceiling and quickly extinguished that fire.
Firefighters also found a locked door in the kitchen that was very hot, broke through the door and found more fire burning there.
The room was described in the fire report as a dry goods storage area.
Firefighters then began the lengthy process of trying to get all the smoke out of the building.
Fire units were on the scene until just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
The cafeteria area showed no apparent damage other than the odor.
Cause of the fire was under investigation Monday morning.
