Driver killed in CEFCO crash identified

The driver of an 18-wheeler killed when it crashed and burned at a Waco convenience store last Thursday has been identified as 41-year-old Gabriel Leyva of San Juan, Texas.

Police say the investigation into the crash is still open.

Police were called at 1:40 a.m. Thursday about a truck tractor rig crashing into a sign and pumps at the CEFCO store at 18th Street and I-35.

The truck caught fire but  the store itself was not involved.

First responders reported the truck fully engulfed when they arrived.

The fire department written report indicated the tractor portion of the rig had heavy damage from its impact with a metal light post, sign and large pipes holding another CEFCO sign

The driver of the truck was reported trapped inside the vehicle and was killed.

There were no early reports of other injuries.

The 17th and 18th street exit was closed as were some other streets behind the store.

They remained closed until about 7:45 but the access road intersection was still closed for cleanup.

Grones Hazmat contractor was on the scene assisting with the cleanup with water runoff from fighting the fire blocked by a dam put up to reduce the amount of water running into a nearby storm drain.
