Duel On The Brazos expecting thousands this weekend

The Duel On The Brazos is back in Waco after three years.

“If you’ve never seen boats run from a standing stop to 150 to 220 miles an hour on water, it’s something like you’ll never experience before,” said Gary Payne, local event organizer.

It’s the Southern Drag Boat Association’s 41st year racing in Waco.

“We have racers coming from California, South Carolina, Virginia, we have racers coming from all over,” added Payne.

To experience drag racing in one of the best natural race courses in the country, the Brazos River.

“We’d like to fill the park like the old days when there were 10 or 12 thousand people on the bank,” said Payne.

Those thousands of people mean a lot of trash.

“We have probably 8.8 million tons of plastic in our ocean. We are personally responsible for what is in our ocean, it’s plastics, it’s styrofoam, it’s straws, it’s wet naps, it’s cigarette buds. We have to get rid of these things or we’re all going to be poisoned and we’ll be the 7th extinction,” said Bruce Huff, Founder of “Group W Bench” Litter Patrol.

The litter patrol group is looking for volunteers to help pick up trash at the event.

“So we’re going to wind up cleaning up all of the East Waco park,” said Huff.

Other volunteers are needed to help with the loading and unloading of the boats.

“It’s a fun job, you’ll get to actually touch these boats, the drivers will high five them as they go in the water and it can be some fun to come down there and work at the races,” said Payne.

Right now, they need all hands on deck for Sunday.

“Because it’s mothers day, it’s very hard to get folks to do stuff because obviously you want to spend it with mom. But I figure, you can spend it with mom after the boat races,” said Huff.

All volunteers get FREE admission to the event and a “staff” t-shirt.

If you are interested in volunteering call Bruce Huff at (254) 598-8319. Shifts include two 4-hour shifts each day from 10 am until 2 pm or 1 pm to 5pm.

Tickets for the event are free for Friday, $30 for Saturday and $30 for Sunday or $50 for both days. They can be bought the day of at East Brazos.
