A Brazos County man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for abusing a young girl over a five year period,  but could be facing even more with a different charge still pending.

Judge Travis Bryan sentenced David Benavidez to the 30 years for aggravated sexual assault of a child after he was convicted last Thursday.

The Brazos County District Attorney’s Office says that Benavidez is still facing a charge of assault family violence by strangulation in connection with a 2015 incident involving the same victim.

Benavidez was arrested in May of 2017 following an investigation into an outcry made by the victim when she was fifteen years old.

It was in October 2016 that the victim told her mother she was being abused,  and that it had gone back to the period around the Christmas holidays of 2011 when she was just ten years old.

A statement issued by the DA’s office said she had been molested on more than fifteen occasions between December 2011 and May 2015.

In a joint statement Assistant District Attorneys Kara Comte and R. Clay Kimbrough said, ” Courageous voices of victims of sexual abuse shine a light on a crime that happens in the dark.  This young girl’s bravery has insured that David Benavidez will never prey on another child.”
