After blood test results were obtained, Waco police report a 31-year-old man who was the driver of a 2016 Jeep Patriot involved in a traffic crash January 2 has been arrested.
Jonathan Payton Fletcher was booked into the McLennan County Jail on two counts of intoxication assault and one count of injury to a child.
Police responded to the crash at 3:50 p.m. in the 1400 block of South new Road January 2.
The police report indicates that a six-year-old child was riding in the front seat of Fletcher’s vehicle not properly restrained and received what were termed significant injuries.
Waco Police Department spokesman Patrick Swanton said that in the crash, Fletcher drove his car into the opposing lane causing a head on collision with a 2008 Kia Sportage.
An arrest affidavit quoted a witness who reported the driver of the Jeep appeared to be asleep or passed out when the collision occurred.
The affidavit quoted the officer working the accident as saying Fletcher appeared to be dazed and would just stare off into the distance.
Occupants of the other vehicle involved were also injured.
A blood draw for Fletcher was ordered at the hospital when officers said it appeared he was under the influence of a drug, later identified as Xanax.
Court papers also indicate that Fletcher admitted to a CPS worker to smoking marijuana as well as taking Xanax prior to the collision.
A warrant was obtained and Fletcher was arrested Wednesday evening.
