A fire in a storage building spread to grass and brush, triggering the evacuation of a nearby mobile home park in Bellmead Thursday morning.
“When we got on scene we had a empty barn back here that was on fire that had some contents in it that was combustible,” said Jeremy Rosas, Firefighter for Bellmead Fire.
Waco fire units were sent to assist Bellmead in fighting the fire that began in the storage building behind 806 Michigan Street.
“Fortunately, it wasn’t going so fast that it got to the mobile home area first, so like I said, we got here pretty quick and got that out before it reached the mobile homes,” added Rosas.
When the fire spread to grass in the wooded area and smoke became heavy, residents of the nearby mobile homes were told they needed to evacuate.
“We were very fortunate, God blessed us today, God blessed the owners today and the mobile home place back here,” said Rosas.
The fire was quickly knocked down, however, and there was no damage to the home where the storage building was located or the nearby mobile homes.
“People get out and they just not paying attention and you know, they’re out welding, or cutting grass and they spark and they just it sparks up a fire and it just goes really fast with the dry conditions,” said Rosas.
Cause of the fire was under investigation late Thursday morning.
