16-year-old Rachel Westberg has died as the result of a deadly hit-and-run in Belton.
Police say the Belton New Tech student was hit by a delivery driver when she was jogging on Industrial Park Road last Saturday night.
Westberg had been recovering in the hospital with a fractured skull. Doctors were trying to stabilize her for the past 48 hours, but the severe brain injury from the crash left her with almost no functionality.
Doctors took Westberg off of medication, and she passed shortly afterward.
The Belton Independent School District says counselors had been sent to her school to comfort her classmates.
Officers say 21-year-old Juan DeLeon of Killeen is the man who hit her.
DeLeon is accused of driving off after the crash, but officers later arrested and booked him into Bell County Jail on Sunday morning.
We are waiting to see if his charges will be upgraded following Westberg’s death.
A GoFundMe fundraising page has been set up to help to support Westberg and her family. If you would like to make a donation, you can go here.
Belton ISD Superintendent Dr. Susan Kincannon released this statement Thursday night:
“Rachael Westberg will always be remembered as a sweet and caring young lady who was loved by her peers. She was a member of the Belton High School Bel Canto Choir and was known for her beautiful voice and being a dedicated student. Counselors will be on hand at Belton New Tech High School @ Waskow for students and staff who need support. Our condolences and thoughts go out to Rachael’s family and all of her friends and classmates.”
