Copperas Cove ISD athletic director resigns

Local

The Copperas Cove Independent School District is in search of a new athletic director and head football coach.

The school board announced Jack Welch’s resignation in a special meeting on Thursday.

Board members entered an hour-long Executive Session before unanimously approving Welch’s request to retire.

The long-time head coach has been with the district for nearly three decades.

Welch released a statement saying ” Dear Bulldawg Nation, after much prayer and reflection, I have decided to retire from Copperas Cove ISD .I have dedicated my life to helping young people for 38 years… it is extremely rare for a coach to stay in one place for 24 years. I am deeply grateful to the community for the outstanding support.”

This news is shocking for one area resident.

“I was a little bit surprised at the announcement,” says area resident Mark Peterson. “Like I said, Jack has been here 24 years and he’s done a tremendous job for us since he’s been our football coach and athletic director.”

Welch’s resignation is effective this coming Tuesday.
