The Hill County Sheriff’s Office reports that a drone operated by Hill County Emergency Management led to the capture of a driver who fled an I-35 traffic stop Thursday night.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson said the incident started with a DPS trooper making a traffic stop on an 18-wheeler that was Southbound  on I-35 near the 358 mile marker in the Abbott area.

As the trooper approached the cab of the truck,  he smelled the odor of marijuana.

The driver of the truck fled on foot into a wooded area.

Other agencies including the Hill County Sheriff’s Office joined in a search for the man.

Among those responding was Hill County Emergency Management which deployed their unmanned aircraft to aid in the search.

The operator of the drone spotted the man they were looking for,  was able to track him and  direct deputies to his location.

The entire episode lasted about an hour and ten minutes and resulted in 44-year-old John C. Farrow, believed to be from Fort Worth being taken into custody.

He was taken to the Hill County Jail initially held on a charge of evading arrest.

The investigation into the incident was continuing Friday.
