The mystery behind kids being seen loaded into the trunk of a car has been solved and it turns out there was nothing sinister about it at all, just a short ride to another car during a family outing.
The incident started in Waco and ended in Bell County.
Waco police had gotten a call about a possible abduction or child endangerment when several witnesses reported seeing a woman putting at least two small children in the trunk of a vehicle at Cameron Park and driving away Monday evening.
After putting out a description of the car including the license number that an alert witness was able to provide, police asked for public assistance in finding the car.
When a registration check on the plate number turned up an address in Bell County, police asked for the Bell County Sheriff’s Department to assist in checking the address the car was registered to.
A Bell County Sheriff’s spokesman says when deputies arrived at the home, they found everyone fine and no indication of any foul play.
As deputies talked with those involved, they found that a large family had gone to the zoo in Waco for the day.
At the zoo the family’s pickup and car had parked a good distance apart and rather than walk the children riding in the pickup to it or waiting for the truck to pull around, the woman ahd the kids get in the trunk area of the car and drove them over to the pickup in the parking lot.
Deputies identified everyone, and the children were spoken to individually and it was verified that they had not been kidnapped, and that all were safe and doing well.
An incident report was being filed to assist Waco PD with their end of the investigation of the event and no charges were being filed.
