Killeen PD investigating fatal motorcycle crash

Local

A motorcyclist is dead after crashing into a wall while trying to escape from police.

Police now say the officer saw two motorcycles involved in a traffic violation.

One stopped, but the other 21-year-old Caden Michael Shunk raced off, it’s a decision that led to his death.

In 2017, almost 9,000 crashes killed 500 motorcyclists and seriously injured more than 2,000 across Texas.

21-year-old Caden Michael Shunk died Wednesday afternoon after police believe he went too fast around a curve on his motorcycle.

“Excess speeds on our roads whether with motorcycles or other vehicles is always an issue and is always one of those factors that contributes to crashes with motorcycles as well as other vehicles,” says Ken Roberts with TxDOT.

A Killeen police officer say he saw Shunk commit a traffic violation and attempted to pull him over, but instead he sped off.

Shunk crashed into a wall in the 1300 block of Stagecoach Rd going at a high speed.

“It’s always easier to maintain control of a vehicle with more wheels than you would normally have on a motorcycle,” Roberts explains.

When Shunk hit the wall, he flew off and struck a tree. Police found him in a nearby parking lot.

“Motorcyclists are not protected so anything and everything that they can do, they can wear is going to contribute to greater safety and fewer injuries,” Robert explains.

Roberts says a motorcycle rider dies every day in a crash on Texas roadways.

“Which is a pretty high percentage overall you know that’s another one of those items that we want to ensure that we can try to end that streak of fatalities on Texas roadways,” Robert continues.

Investigators are asking that the other motorcycle rider who pulled over to contact them so they can get more information about the initial incident.

The Killeen Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash on Stagecoach Road.

A patrol officer was traveling northbound on W.S. Young Drive early Wednesday morning, when he saw a black motorcycle traveling southbound towards Stagecoach Road committing a traffic violation.

The officer turned his patrol vehicle in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the motorcycle.

The motorcycle rider continued to travel and turned westbound onto Stagecoach Road at a high rate of speed, when the officer lost sight of the motorcycle.

When the officer approached the 1300 block of Stagecoach Road, he found the motorcycle in the roadway and a man lying in a nearby parking lot. The preliminary investigation revealed the operator of the motorcycle failed to negotiate the curve while traveling westbound on Stagecoach Road and collided into a retaining wall, causing him to be thrown off from the motorcycle and struck a tree.

21 year-old Caden Michael Shunk succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke at 12:58 a.m. He ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

The Killeen Police Department Traffic Unit continues to investigate this crash and information will be released as it becomes available.
