A man accused of stealing over $202,000 in property from a man who had hired him to guard his business has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The sentenced was enhanced for Scotty Wayne Johnson on the basis of previous out-of-state convictions.
Johnson was arrested after a 2017 investigation.
An arrest affidavit obtained in May 2017 indicated Johnson was employed by a business called Craftmasters in the 1200 block of South Loop Drive in Waco and was accused of taking auto parts, racing parts, racing suits and various forms of metal.
Court papers said that Johnson lived on the property for almost two years, with part of his job including overseeing the business after hours and making sure no one entered the premises.
Instead of guarding the property, investigators say he appeared to have been taking it.
Investigators say their investigation showed that from the first of the year through early May 2017 he had 81 tickets that showed he had sold scrap metal at a local recycling facility and had pawned 42 items at area pawn shops.
The items pawned and scrapped were valued at over $27,000.
An inventory of the business indicated an additional $175,000 in racing parts, tools and other items were missing.
Police say that while Johnson had no criminal history in Texas at the time, he did have an extensive criminal history in Utah, with 25 arrests and 17 convictions.
