New attendance zones approved for Killeen ISD campuses

The Killeen Independent School District took a major step toward renovation and new construction of the district’s namesake high school with the school board’s unanimous approval of the design of the project on Tuesday night.

The renovation project will include new academic classrooms, a new auxiliary gymnasium, some new athletics locker rooms, an enlarged cafeteria to provide room for all students to eat lunch in the building, allowing the district to close the campus during lunch.

The design also will provide for renovated special education classrooms, renovated career and technical education classrooms, a renovated library and additional computer labs. An alternative proposal to the project would also create new fine arts and athletics facilities.

The new construction and renovations will be completed in 2022.

The district says with the construction of Maude Moore Wood Elementary nearing completion, the school board voted unanimously to approve new zones for the 2019-20 school year on Tuesday night.

These new zones will be for the Skipcha, Timber Ridge, Cedar Valley and Douse Elementary School campuses. A slight modification to the original rezoning proposal was also approved.

Students in the Tuscany Meadows zone will be allowed to apply for a special transfer consideration for the 2019-2020 school year, allowing them to remain at Skipcha Elementary School. Transportation will be provided only to Maude Moore Wood Elementary for this attendance zone.

Students electing to remain at Skipcha Elementary School will need to provide their own transportation.

Wood Elementary is located in the southeast quadrant of the school district, in the White Rock Estates subdivision, at 6410 Morganite Lane.

The district says creating a new attendance zone causes changes to existing attendance zones for adjacent schools, and that this process affords the district an opportunity to relieve overcrowding situations at schools in close proximity.
