Waco police Friday morning said there has been no arrest in a Thursday evening shooting on Pewitt Drive in which a man was shot multiple times in the chest, calling the shooting self defense.

Police were called out at 7:15 p.m. regarding a shooting at 3430 Pewitt Drive and on arrival found a man identified as 60-year-old Raymond Morris with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers initially detained a 40-year-old man as the shooter.

Waco Police Department Spokesman Patrick Swanton Friday said as officers worked through the events of the evening, they determined that Morris had been taking illegal drugs and had been on a binge since Mother’s Day.

As he started coming down from his high, he fell asleep Thursday morning.

When Morris woke up, police were told that he began exhibiting what witnesses describe as a ” fit of rage” and started yelling at his fiance’s son.

The man eventually identified as the shooter told police he heard the disturbance and armed himself.

Police were told that Morris then directed his rage at him, grabbed a ceramic lamp and told the man he was going to kill him.

At that point, the man tried to leave the house, but police say Morris followed him outside with the lamp and chased him.

Even when faced with the weapon, Morris is reported to have charged with the lamp, at which time the armed man fired several shots in what a police statement called self defense.

Morris was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital where he was taken into emergency surgery.

His condition was not available Friday morning.
