Officer head butted in face, man arrested

Local

A Gatesville police officer was injured early Monday when he was head butted in the face while trying to arrest a fugitive.

It happened in the parking lot of a Gatesville convenience store just after midnight when the officer spotted a man he recognized and knew was wanted in Bell County for non payment of child support.

When the man,  later confirmed as being Benjamin Irving Boaz, was approached, he gave a false name, but the officer knew him and attempted to take him into custody.

He refused to comply and began running across the parking lot.

The officer quickly chased him down, with the man wrestling with the officer and head butting him in the face resulting in injuries.

He was eventually subdued and taken to the Coryell County Jail.

The 28-year-old Boaz was later arraigned on charges of felony assault on a peace officer, failure to identify as a fugitive and possession of marijuana under two ounces,  in addition to the original Bell County charges.

He remained in jail Wednesday under $34,000 bond.
