A new high school with a price tag of $150-$170 million is high on the priority list of a committee of parents and community members working on plans for a potential bond package for the Killeen Independent School District.

It has been fifteen years since a bond issue was placed before voters in the district and this one appears to be on its way to being a big one.

The proposed new high school would open in 2022.

The top priority identified by the group was upgrades to all schools for security and better access for persons with disabilities.

No estimated price for those renovations has been determined.

During a Thursday night work session, the bond steering committee also identified a new elementary that would allow consolidation of East and West Ward Elementary schools, a new elementary  to consolidate Pershing Park Elementary, Sugar Loaf Elementary and part of Bellaire Elementary’s student population, along with construction of what would be KISD elementary school number 36, and renovation and expansion of Clifton Park Elementary that would also pick up part of Bellaire Elementary’s population.

Other high priorities were placed on construction of middle school number 15, the renovation of Killeen High School, renovation and expansion of Peebles Elementary and renovation and expansion of Harker Heights Elementary.

Each of the elementary school projects would carry a price tag of 44-52 million dollars, with the high school renovation estimated at 44-53 million dollars.

The steering committee has met three times and will meet again November 30 to continue preparing recommendations to be presented to the school board December 12.

The board will make a final decision in February whether to call a bond election and what projects would be included.

The district’s population has passed 44,300 students this year.
