Texas Department of Public Safety divers explored Lake Belton for a gun related to the murders of 24-year-old Valarie Martinez and her one-year-old daughter.
Both were shot to death on November 5, 2017 at Tradinghouse Lake in McLennan County.
26-year-old Christopher Weiss, the father of the one-year-old, is charged with their deaths – but so far there is no sign of the murder weapon.
A tip brought divers to Lake Belton on Tuesday.
“The lead said that there is possibly a firearm in the waters here at Lake Belton, so the dive team responded and that’s where we’re at today,” says DPS Trooper David Roberts.
Divers only looked in the area near Hidden Canyon Park, and it is not known if they will be searching anywhere else on the lake.
“From the looks of it, it seems that they have some very specific information because they are not combing a large area right now,” Roberts says.
Hidden Canyon Park is closed off because the area is a crime scene right now. Divers previously searched Lake Waco for the murder weapon.
“The dive team itself is used in cases where there is evidence that could possibly be submerged. Also, they assist Texas Parks and Wildlife sometimes in the search for a body, if necessary,” Roberts says.
