A McLennan County jury found Shawn Oakman not guilty of sexual assault Thursday afternoon after a little more than two hours of deliberations.
The decision came after Oakman’s attorneys spent much of Thursday morning calling forensic and medical experts to dispute the testimony of the state’s experts. They also questioned Oakman’s friends about the night a woman says Oakman attacked her. Chris Sanders, Patrick Levels, and
Terrence Nathan all defended him during their testimony.
Police say when he was first arrested, Oakman admitted having sex with the woman, but claimed it was consensual. On Wednesday, that woman testified.
At the start of the trial, 19th District Court Judge Ralph Strother’s recused himself from the case. That cleared the way for visiting judge Mike Snipes to take over.
