Temple fire investigation ongoing

Temple fire investigators say they are still working to determine the exact cause of a fire that destroyed  a house and a car back on March 15.

The fire also damaged a house next door after breaking out in the first home at 706 North 4th Street.

Temple Fire & Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal said Friday that investigators have learned that the two occupants of the house did not have permission to be inside the house,  and that there were no utilities connected to the home which had previously been tagged by the city as being uninhabitable.

A woman was also arrested at the scene after becoming combative with fire personnel.

Candles were found to have been in use in the home.

The house had been vacant for a time when investigators said the pair who had been living there had moved in.

Fire department personnel urged owners of homes that are currently uninhabited make sure they are fully secured and locked and to keep them lit and checked on a regular basis, noting that vacant homes often serve as sites for illicit or illegal activity and are sometimes used by homeless people as temporary shelters or housing.
