A total of three apartments were affected by a Thursday morning fire at the Village Square Apartments at 3500 Meyers Lane in Lacy Lakeview.
The call came in from a neighbor just before 6:00 a.m., with units from Lacy Lakeview, Waco, Bellmead and Elm Mott responding.
“I’m just thankful that we made it, you know, that my son’s okay, my daughter. Because it’s a scary thing, I’ve never been through anything like it,” said Deonte James, who called authorities. “Oh man, I freaked, honestly, when the smoke billowed into the room, like I panicked.”
The fire was knocked down rather quickly, with heavy fire damage to one unit that was gutted with the fire getting into the attic and to the exterior finishing.
“The whole bedroom is like scorched, it’s no salvaging the bedroom, the kitchen is partially burned, I believe the closet, like it’s bad, it’s bad and I mean you know, honestly it’s going to be something tough to go through, it’s going to be one heck of a transition,” said James.
Other residents, aired out their homes later Thursday morning, hoping to get rid of the smell, but also worried about what comes next.
“My concern right now is we done paid all our bills for this month ain’t got very much money left, can’t even get a motel. If they tell us we don’t have a place to stay tonight, we don’t know where to go. That’s the situation we’re in,” said Johnny Butler, neighbor.
There were no injuries.
Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
