The community of Gatesville is mourning the loss of two high school students over the weekend.
Friends and family have identified the 16-year-olds who died in a car crash as Kyle Tennison and Ethan Sandell. A third teenage passenger is still in the hospital.
“It’s just rough. We shouldn’t be burying our children. It’s just so sad. A hole has been ripped in me that I will never get back. Never,” says Jimmy Tennison, Kyle’s father.
Tennison and Sandell died when the truck they were in crashed into a tree just after 1:00 a.m. Saturday on Cedar Ridge Road. FOX44 has been told a third teenager named Dylan was also in the truck. He is currently inside a hospital with injuries.
Tennison’s father believes the trio was drinking that night.
“Bad decisions were made that night, and now we’ve got three families, we’ve got a whole community that’s grieving over this. It ain’t just us,” Tennison says.
While other students returned to school, one friend who didn’t want to be identified couldn’t bear to go to class without them.
“Me and Kyle, in several classes, sat at a table just me and him. And I knew I wasn’t going to be able to do it if I sat down and he wasn’t there,” she says.
Now the family wants to use their loved ones’ deaths as a lesson to other students.
“We know it’s going to happen. It’s not going to change the world. We wish it could, because that’s how spectacular he is. He could have changed the world,” says Christy Tennison, Kyle’s aunt.
Ethan’s funeral is planned for Thursday. A joint vigil is tentatively planned for Friday at Gatesville High School.
Kyle’s funeral will be at 10am on Saturday at Coryell Community Church.
