Many call him Coach.
But Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputies have other words to describe David Balsinger.
The seventh-grade teacher that also coached soccer, football, and basketball is behind bars for sending explicit texts and asking for nude photos from whom he believed was a 15-year-old teen girl.
Killeen ISD has confirmed that Balsinger, coach and teacher at Union Grove Middle School who has been the subject of a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office investigation has been placed on administrative leave and barred from access to any KISD schools.
The investigation of David Balsinger had been part of a Hamilton County sting operation targeting child predators leading to charges of online solicitation of a minor.
Justin Caraway, Sheriff of Hamilton County, says situations like these are always disturbing, but this case even more so because of Balsingers position as an educator.
“It’s concerning and that’s why we expedited this investigation and when we find out that this person has access every day to children we speed those investigations up,” said Caraway, “It’s all disturbing knowing this position, after we interviewed him that he was just helping this child out, and we asked him how is he helping her out by asking to send nude pictures of herself, he really had no answer to that.”
The target of the solicitation did not involve any Killeen ISD student.
“The Killeen Independent School District requires teachers and all employees to maintain the highest standards of conduct and will never tolerate illegal or inappropriate behavior by an employee toward any child. We are saddened and outraged by this alleged conduct by one of our teachers. We will work closely with law enforcement officials in this matter, and if the allegations prove true, we will support the strongest possible legal action against this teacher,” Superintendent John Craft said.
Balsinger has taught and coached at Union Grove since 2007.
He joined KISD as a substitute teacher in 1990, became a teacher aide in 1991, served again as a substitute teacher from 1992-1996, and then began full time teaching in 1997 at Clear Creek Elementary where he worked for six years.
He taught at Mountain View Elementary for four years beginning in 2003 before joining Union Grove Middle in 2007.
Court papers filed Thursday indicated an investigation had been conducted using a covert messaging application account called KIK beginning September 6 when the first contact was made between Balsinger and someone he believed to be a fifteen year old girl in Evant, Texas.
The arrest affidavit alleged that Balsinger’s messages involved sexually explicit information and a request that the person with whom he was communicating send sexually explicit pictures of herself.
The affidavit indicated that on Tuesday the exchanges went on from about 6:30 a.m. until just after 10:00 p.m.
The same time a football game was going on where Balsinger was teaching.
On Wednesday investigators obtained a search and seizure warrant for Balsinger’s electronic devices.
Court papers indicate that investigators traveled to Union Grove Middle School on Wednesday and conducted interviews with Balsinger during which he gave statements concerning the messages he had been exchanging with who he believed was a fifteen year old girl, the request for nude photographs and confirming that he knew it was wrong to solicit nude photographs of a child.
Balsinger was arrested on charges of on-line solicitation of a minor.
