The Killeen Independent School District school board unanimously approved the design of a new $54 million middle school on Tuesday night.
The school will play a major role in the school district’s plan to virtually eliminate the need for trailers to house middle school students on crowded campuses.
Middle school #14 is not part of the proposed bond program on the ballot for voter approval May 5. The school will be paid for with existing funds saved and set aside for school construction as a result of the efficient management of the budget by the school board and the district administration.
The new middle school will serve the fast-growing student population in the southeast area of Harker Heights.
When the school is finished and opens for classes in 2020, the district will be able to rezone its other middle schools and reduce the student enrollments enough that virtually all the students at each middle school campus will take classes inside the main school building.
The 1,250-student school will be located on 33 undeveloped acres west of Warriors Path, and is scheduled to open in August 2020.
The school will include a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program and will serve grades 6-8. The school design the board is expected to vote on Tuesday includes general classrooms, science and computer labs at each grade level, STEM labs, a cafeteria with stage, a library and media center, band and choir suites with an option for an additional orchestra suite, art rooms, a theater arts room with stage access, shared computer labs, gym and weight room, courtyards and outdoor learning spaces, a competition field and two practice fields.
