A Wednesday evening house fire in a rural Falls County community has left one person dead and another injured.
Fire units were sent to a one-story wood frame house on Falls County Road 2906, near Reagan.
A 16-year-old boy was found in the house, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. A teenage girl was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
Friends of the family tell FOX44 news the boy had autism and firefighters weren’t able to get him out of the house until an hour after they arrived.
A firefighter says the wood framed house had a lot of debris in it, which made it hard to rescue anyone from inside.
“It’s sad. I mean, I knew the girl who tried to save her brother,” says Jennifer Scott, a neighbor.
Scott lives one road over from the damaged house and says the young girl attended her church.
Neighbors think an electrical short started the fire and field mice may be to blame.
Only hours after the tragedy, the community is trying to support the victims. Scott’s neighbor gave her money to donate to the family.
“I go to her house, and she hands me this envelope with money in it and asked me if I could get it to the family. I told her I’d do my best to get it to where it needed to go,” Scott says.
Reagan firefighters were assisted by personnel from Rosebud-Lott and Marlin. The State Fire Marshal will be assisting in the investigation.
