A College Station woman is now in police custody due to the risk of harm to her child.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Rio Grande Boulevard and Harvey Mitchell Parkway on Wednesday morning for a report of a small child unaccompanied near a heavy traffic area.

Nearby College Station Fire Department personnel and other concerned persons stepped out with the four-year-old girl to prevent her from wandering into traffic.

The child was unable to tell the responding officers where she lived or other identifiers. Officers checked with nearby schools and daycares, but were unable to determine where the child lived.

After a considerable amount of time with no calls reporting a missing child, officers reached out to the public through social media sources. These efforts resulted in tips leading to the identity of the child’s parent.

After about three hours from the time the child was found, officers located her mother at an apartment a few blocks away. She was unaware the child was missing.

An investigation revealed the mother, identified as 39-year-old Stephanie Michelle Case, of College Station, left her residence earlier in the morning without leaving the child with responsible care. Case returned about an hour later and saw the child was not in her bed, but never made efforts to locate or check the welfare of the child.

Case was arrested for Abandoning or Endangering a Child placed in custody due to the risk of harm to the child. Child Protective Services responded to assist with the investigation.
