A mother is demanding answers after her son was shot and killed in Killeen.
Family says 24-year-old Yorrick Toms was found dead after police responded to a burglary call at an apartment a week ago.
Renee Michaels just wants to know what happened the night her son was killed.
“Someone killed my son. Someone deliberately killed my son and he didn’t deserve that,” Michaels said. “I am feeling confused. I am feeling unaware because I really don’t know what happened to my son.”
On Dec. 20, Killeen police showed up to an apartment complex on Westcliff Road after someone called about a burglary.
Police found a 24-year-old man dead in the home. While KPD has not identified him, family says it was Yorrick Toms.
“That morning changed my son. It changed his father,” Michaels said. “It changed his siblings.”
Michaels says she was in shock when she got the news from detectives the next day.
“[The detective] had to tell me he was deceased in front of my 13-year-old child.”
She says this summer, Toms moved to Texas from Virginia to be closer to family. He leaves behind a one-year-old daughter.
“he had big dreams. He had goals,” Michaels said. “My son got here here for two weeks and was already working two to three jobs to save money because he had goals to meet. He came here with a plan.”
The family just wants answers, hoping to find who is responsible for what happened.
“We loved our son,” Michaels said. “So for him to be taken away from us. From his daughter, from his family, the way they took him away… He didn’t deserve that. Nobody deserves that.”
The family says Toms was sent to Maryland Thursday night where he will be laid to rest.
