Firefighters from Bynum, Penelope, Abbott and the City of Hillsboro responded to a house fire at a rural home near Bynum early Tuesday morning that has left one person dead.

Hill County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Rick White said the victim was a 13 year old boy from West who was visiting.

Four family members who lived at the home and another visitor got out safely.

White said that smoke alarms woke the family and got them moving to get out of the house.

The alarm went out at 12:24 a.m. for the fire on Hill County Private Road 326.

The house was totally destroyed.

Firefighters worked several hours on the fire in the large, two story house, with some hotspots still being worked on late Tuesday morning.

A representative from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was on the scene early assisting with the investigation, though as of late Tuesday morning the cause of the fire had not been determined.

Chief Deputy White said the name of the victim was not being released because he was a juvenile.
