A Central Texas woman is behind bars after she allegedly beat her child when the baby would not stop crying.

According to the Temple Police Department, on Monday, officers were called to the a local hospital on reports of an injured child. When authorities made it to the hospital, medical officials informed them a 1-month-old child had arrived with life-threatening injuries to the head.

The mother told medical staff she tripped over a cat and fell with the infant at their on the 4100 block of W. Adams Avenue. The woman was identified as Sarah Elizabeth Wagner, 23, of Temple.

During interviews, detectives learned the baby’s father left the home for work at 11:45 a.m. After he was gone, the child woke up and would not stop crying. Police said the baby’s mother admitted she began to punch the child multiple times until she stopped when blood appeared on the side of his head.

The case was turned over to the Bell County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday and an arrest warrant was later issued by Justice of the Peace David Barfield. 

Wagner was arrested without incident on Wednesday. She was booked into the Bell County Jail.

The baby remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
