TxDOT debuts Heads Up campaign


Around 500 crashes happened in Waco last year due to distracted driving, and the Texas Department of Transportation wants to help lower this number. 

In honor of National Distracted Driving Month, TxDOT launched a campaign with AT&T called Heads Up to remind drivers their undivided attention could save a life.

They are bringing a virtual reality experience to 19 different cities to help educate the community.

365 keys hang on a wall to symbolize there is a distracted driving crash every day. The names of victims who died due to distracted driving were also displayed.

They were at Midway High School on Wednesday to show students what could happen if they text and drive. 

“Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes and deaths on Texas roadways,” says Ken Roberts, of TxDOT Waco. “So we want to highlight, particularly with teen drivers, the hazards of driving distracted. Obviously one of the key distractions are cell phones.”

TxDOT will be heading to Austin on Thursday for their second stop.
