A man Temple police said was going the wrong way on one-way Avenue H causing other drivers to swerve to avoid head on collisions has been arrested and taken to jail.

Twenty-nine-year-old Telofilo Vasquez-Perez was initially held on a charge of public intoxication, but was being screened for felony charges following the Sunday morning incident.

It was about 6:53 a.m. that an officer spotted a dark-colored Dodge Charger turn eastbound off South 31st Street onto a one way street in the 1500 block of West Avenue H.

The officer noted other drivers taking evasive action as the Charger came toward them.

The officer activated lights and siren and got the car stopped.

He said in his report that as he approached the car, he noticed multiple beer bottles in the floor board and that the driver’s eyes were glassy and his breath smelled of alcohol.

His report also indicated that as he searched the man’s person, he recovered a small baggie containing a white powdery substance that later tested positive for a controlled substance.

There was no collision and no one was injured.
