The Baylor Lady Bears had several players honored by the Big 12 Conference on Wednesday with individual awards including Coach of The Year, Kim Mulkey and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Lauren Cox.
One Lady Bear who was not able to repeat as the conference player of the year was senior Kalani Brown. Iowa State’s Bridget Carleton took home the honor leading the Big 12 Conference in points per game and steals.
Brown is a semi-finalist for the Women’s Naismith Player of the year award and Mulkey said multiple times leading up to the voting that she believed Brown should be the Big 12 Player of the year, but at the end of the day, her team is more focused on Championship trophies than individual awards.
“Our players, they don’t come here for those awards,” she said. “They’ll tell you quickly it’s all about the ring, and they have a ring, and they want to get another ring. Those awards are somebody’s opinion. I have an opinion, I guess it’s like politics and voting right? Everyone gets in a booth and puts their opinion down there. I just know, I’ve got a team that’s pretty darn special.”
The Lady Bears will travel to Oklahoma City on Friday ahead of the Big 12 Tournament. They will open play, in Oklahoma City, at 1:30pm on Saturday against either Oklahoma or Texas Tech.
