The Baylor Lady Bears are making their 11th-straight trip to the Sweet Sixteen where they will face a South Carolina team they beat back in December 94-69.
Junior Lauren Cox knows that in the four months between meetings a lot has changed with both teams so they can’t put too much stock in what happened back then.
“We can’t think about that game,” she said. “We shot the ball really well that game and this game we might not shoot it so well. They might have a different game plan. they’re playing a lot better everyone plays their best towards the end of the year so, it’s definitely going to be a different game.”
Head Coach Kim Mulkey said that game gives you some familiarity with the personnel that South Carolina brings to the table, but they will break down their entire body of work against their SEC Schedule.
“You’re not really going to change who you are so what we’ll do is we’ll not only look at that game, but really we’re going to look at SEC stuff,” Mulkey said. “How’d they do against Mississippi State? How’d they guard the big girls from Mississippi State. That’s more recent so that’s what we’ll focus on.”
The Lady Bears will try to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2012, and Cox feels like the added depth for this team is a big reason why they are positioned to get back this year.
“Kalani and I were basically the only post players, [last year] I mean Dekeiya went inside some but we were having to play high-30 to 35 minute games we were just tired. When Kristy got hurt we lost that senior leadership, that experience, so this year, me and Kalani got to sit the whole 4th quarter in that Cal game. So just getting that rest is really important.”
Baylor will host a send-off on Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm outside of the Ferrell Center before they make their journey to Greensboro.
