As the confetti fell from the Ferrell Center rafters on Wednesday night, The Baylor Lady Bears were soaking up the moment, capturing their ninth-straight Big 12 regular season title.
Shortly after the confetti covered the entire court, though, they knew this great accomplishment was part of a bigger journey, and they had just taken a big first step.
“We’ve got a goal to win the tourney championship of the Big 12, we’ve got a goal to go to a Final Four and fight for a national championship,” Head Coach Kim Mulkey said. “This is just one, but it’s always going to be one that we celebrate. Guys it’s not easy to win one, we’ve won 10, nine in a row. That’s just a blessing.”
Senior Kalani Brown celebrated her 4th Big 12 title in four years at Baylor, but the fact she has never celebrated a Final Four berth is something she takes personally.
“Getting stopped there three years in a row it drives you crazy because you’re so close to getting to the Final Four,” she said. “That’s all coach wants that’s all I want, That’s all i want my teammates to experience, so yeah, I’ve got to take it personal.”
Iowa State, Texas and West Virginia enter this weekend as the only teams left that could possibly catch Baylor and share the title, but they all have games left against Baylor starting on Saturday when the champs head to Ames to take on Iowa State.
“We still have four very important games to play. Three of our four opponents, guys are tied for second place and two of them we have on the road. We understand this is something to celebrate and be happy about but we’ve got to come back to work tomorrow.”
The Lady Bears will get jumping with Iowa State bargaining at 3:00pm on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum, in Ames.
