The Lorena softball team is making their third straight appearance in the third round as they prepare to face district foe China Spring.
The Lady Leopards have already beat China Spring twice, and there’s a chance they could see another district foe down the road if Robinson and Lorena keep winning. District 17-4A still has three playoff teams remaining and seeing these teams throughout the regular season has prepared Lorena for their playoff run.
“Our district definitely helps a lot because we have a tough district,” Pitcher Rachel Williams said. “Having seen Robinson and China Spring previously will help a lot. And will help us be prepared for what’s to come.”
This program is also coming off a trip to the regional finals a season ago, and being playoff tested gives them a leg up as they make their run to Austin.
“I think it gives us a drive, something to push for,” Lorena Third baseman Kaci Donaldson said. “It gives us something to work for; a goal.”
The Lady Leopards are coming off a series win over LaGrange where they lost a lead late in game two, then fell behind early in a decisive game three, but they rattled off 7-unanswered runs to advance to the third round, and that never-give-up mentality is something Head Coach Steve Dolezel, preaches every day.
“That’s what we tell our girls, make your at bats count,” he said. “Don’t go up there and hopefully swing at the first pitch. Lets make our bats count if they’re going to not throw strikes to us, then we’ll just pass the bat, take our walk and move on.”
Lorena and China Spring open their series on Friday night at The Waco ISD Softball Complex.
