BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team locked down Sul Ross in the second half and the Cru locked up a share of the American Southwest Conference West Division title with a 95-75 win over the Lobos Thursday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 19-5 overall and 10-5 in ASC play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 10-14 overall and 5-10 in the ASC on the year.
The game went back-and-forth in the early going with Sul Ross taking a 20-19 lead with 10:43 left in the first half. Brian Long’s four-point play ignited a 20-7 run as UMHB built a 12-point lead with 4:43 remaining in the opening period. The Lobos fought back and cut the lead to 47-42 at halftime. The Cru took the lead back into double figures two minutes into the second half and held the Lobos at bay as Sul Ross never got closer than eight points. UMHB’s lead ballooned to as many as 28 points as the Cru eased to the victory.
Brian Long hit 10-13 shots, including 3-4 from beyond the arc to score a game-high 33 points. Long also had seven rebounds. Demarius Cress scored 15 points, Sam Moore had 13 points and a team-best nine boards and Byrale Carter added 11 points. The Cru shot 46 percent from the field and went 8-27 from beyond the arc. UMHB was 23-38 from the free-throw line and out rebounded the Lobos 46-44.
Tristen Licon topped Sul Ross with 17 points. Aaron Anderson came off the bench to score 13 and Gary Ringo, Jr. had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Lobos shot 40 percent as a team and hit 7-29 from beyond the three-point line.
The Cru closes out the regular season with a 3 pm tip-off against Howard Payne on Saturday. UMHB can clinch the outright ASC West Division championship and a #1 seed in next week’s ASC Championship Tournament with a win over the Yellow Jackets.
