With the Draft directly in front of the Dallas Cowboys, they have some big money deals coming in the not-too-distant future.
Quarterback Dak Prescott will become a free agent after the 2019 season and Zeke Elliott will have a player option after 2019, as well.
With both players expected to command big-money in the wake of big contracts over the last few years to guys like DeMarcus Lawrence and Zach Martin, Cowboys Insider Mickey Spagnola said the Cowboys will need to find good value in this coming draft.
“They’re going to have some big salaries so to me, the best way to supplement your roster is in the draft, especially in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds, where you can find starters but you’ve got to hit,” he said. “So to balance out the Salary cap, you have to be able to add guys at a reasonable salary.”
While those deals are looming, Spagnola said the Cowboys don’t need to be in a hurry to bid against themselves.
“If I’m the one that’s doing negotiating, I’m saying, ‘Okay I’m going to renegotiate your deal,'” Spagnola said. “I’m going to extend you but If I’m going to do it earlier than I need to, then you need to give me a little bit of a discount because you’re getting your money earlier that I have to give it to you.”
The first of the Cowboys six picks will come at pick 58 on Friday in the second round.
